No. The goal of music therapy is not to practice or become proficient on an instrument, it is about progressing through music. We use music therapy interventions that motivate, inspire, and challenge our clients to meet their goals.
Client preferred music is usually the best choice. During an initial assessment the client’s background and musical preferences are noted, to be implemented in subsequent sessions.
No. Music therapy has actually been around for quite some time. Soon after WWII, therapists began working with Veterans who suffered from PTSD, and the practice quickly became an allied health profession.
Yes. Music therapy is an evidenced-based healthcare field with a vast amount of research supporting it’s effectiveness. There are many research publications as well that are available including the Journal of Music Therapy and Music Therapy Perspectives.
Music therapists undergo a bachelor level degree in Music Therapy and most also receive a master or doctorate degree in Music Therapy, as well as additional specialization training. Coursework includes psychology, medical anatomy, specific diagnoses, music theory, music history, and music therapy specific courses. Participatation in four practicum experiences at different sites and completion of an internship with over 1000 hours of work is also required before the music therapist can sit for the board exam through CBMT (Certification Board for Music Therapists). In Utah, music therapists also have a state certification through DOPL (The Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing.)
Coverage for music therapy varies by insurance provider. We are a fee-for-service practice and do not bill insurance providers directly. We do include qualifying CPT codes on all of our invoices for those seeking reimbursement from their insurance.
